This family name is spelled both as “Simmonds” and “Simmons”. However, the contemporaneous record overwhelmingly favors the latter spelling of “Simmons” (no ‘d’). The transcription below retains the spelling of “Simmonds” as written by the author (except the signature, which was spelled “Simmons”).

The Memorial of Rebecca Simmonds of Colleton County of Lands now in her possession, to be registered in the office of his Majesty's Auditor General, pursuant to an Act of Assembly of this Province in that case made and provided ~~~

One tract of Five Hundred [500] acres, granted by the Lords Proprietors to John Simmonds, bearing date the 15th day of January 1710 [15 Jan 1710], situate in Colleton County at a place called Beach [sic] Hill, butting and bounding to the northwestwards on Land of Charles Treadwell and Joseph Simmonds, westwards on Land not then laid out, southeastwards on Land of Moses Norman, northeastwards on Land of George Creichton, at the yearly rent of one shilling per hundred acres.

One Tract of one Hundred [100] acres, granted per the Lords Proprietors to Increase Sumner, bearing date the 13th Jan 1710 [13 Jan 1710], situate in Colleton County, at a place called Beach Hill, butting and bounding northwest on Lands of Francis Holmes, northeast on Land of Joseph Smith, southeast on Lands of John Simmonds, southwest on Land of Robert Winn, at the yearly rent of one shilling per hundred acres

Which two Tracts making up Six Hundred [600] acres I do hereby hold by virtue of the grant abovementioned, and a Deed Poll bearing date the 4th day of June, 1722 [04 Jun 1722] and is hereby required to be registered in the office of his Majesty's Auditor General.

As witness my hand this 23d day of May 1733 [23 May 1733].
