Will of Esther Dubose, Craven County, SC, 01 Aug 1763

In the name of God amen

I Esther Dubose of Craven County in the province of South Carolina Widow being weak in Body but of sound and Disposing mind memory and Understanding thanks be to God for the same do make and ordain this to be and contain my Last Will and Testament

First and Principally I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it me Hoping for the Remission of my sins through the merits and mediation of my Blessed Lord and Saviour [sic] Jesus Christ.

Imprimis it tis my will and I hereby order and direct that all my just and lawful Debts be paid after the Two first Legacies (to wit) to my granddaughter Esther Couturier and my Beloved son Jeptha Dubose is taken out of my Estate, by my Executors hereinafter mentioned.

Item It tis my will and I do hereby give devise and Bequeath unto my will Beloved Granddaughter Esther Couturier Two negroe [sic] Wenches by name, Grace and dido with their Three children Mary, Elonar, and Page one sett Silver Tea spoons Tongs Skimmer one Large and one Pap Ditto one large feather Bed with a home spun Tick one Bed Stead two pair sheets Two Blankets One Quilt and one Counterpin one suit of Curtains one small press all my Wearing Apparel made and unmade one Bolster two Pillows one side saddle and Bridle also all my stock of Cattle marked with my mark and branded thus E3 and all my stock of horses with the same brand with one large black Mare named Finick Branded with George King Brand Together with their Profits and Encrease [sic] to her heirs Executors administrators and Assigns forever

Item It tis my will and I hereby give devise and Bequeath unto my well beloved son Jeptha Dubose one hundred pounds Currency [£100] to be paid as above ordered to him and his heirs forever

Item It tis my will and I hereby give devise and Bequeath unto my well beloved sons Jonathan Jeptha and Joshua all the residue of my Estate (after all my lawful Debts being paid therefrom) to be equally divided share and share alike to them their Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns forever.

Item It tis my will and I hereby order and direct that in case of the death of my Well beloved grand Daughter Esther Couturier before she arrives to the age of Eighteen years or day of Marriage then and in such case I give and bequeath the whole Legacy before given and directed to her to be equally divided share and share alike to my three sons Jonathan, Jephtha [sic] and Joshua to them their Heirs Executors administrators and Assigns forever

Lastly I hereby nominate Constitute and appoint my beloved nephew Theodore Gourdin Executor to that part of my Estate already given to my Granddaughter Esther Couturier in this my Last Will and Testament.

Imprimis I do also hereby nominate Constitute and appoint my beloved sons Jonathan Jeptha and Joshua Executors to that part of my Estate given and Demised to them in this my last Will and Testament Hereby revoking and making void all other wills and Testaments heretofore by me made

In Testamony [sic] whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of August and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty three [01 Aug 1763].

Signed sealed published and declared by the Testator as and for her Last Will and Testament who in her presence and at her request have hereunto set our hands as Witnesses

Proved before his Excellency the Governor April 6th 1764 [06 Apr 1764] at same time qualified Jonathan Dubose and Theodore Gourdin Executors to the said will
