GI Dies After Contracting Polio
Private Ronald H. Maxwell, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Maxwell of 754 Hill Street, Wilkinsburg, died June 29 in Korea after contracting polio, his family has been informed. Private Maxwell, who extended service in October 1953 and sailed for Korea April 30. In Korea, he was diesel operator with the 724th Transportation Battalion. Surviving are his parents, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ewing F. McCloy of Scottdale; and two brothers, David, 16, and Thomas, 14.

Pvt. R. H. Maxwell Dies in Korea, Victim of Polio

SCOTTDALE, July 7. – The Secretary of the Amy has advised Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Maxwell of 754 Hill street, Pittsburgh, that their son,Private Ronald H. Maxwell, 20, died in Korea on June 29 as a result of acute anterior poliomyelitis.
He was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ewing F. McCloy of 101 Spring street, Scottdale, who survive together with his parents, Robert H. and Sara S. McCloy Maxwell, formerly of Wilkinsburg, and two brothers, David, 16,and Thomas, 14.

He entered the service October 20, 1953, and received his training at Camp Pickett, Va., and Fort Eustis, Va., leaving for Korea April 30, last. He was in Pusan, Korea, for one month and then went to Heunde [sic].He served with Company C, 724th Division. He was a diesel operator.

When the parents were first advised of the serious illness of their son, the Army’s telegram referred to his ailment as meningoencephalitis and pneumonia. He died in the 21st Station Hospital.

No word has been received as yet as to the disposition of the remains.
