INDI:EVEN:_PRIM: Y Note: Obituary: David Gibson "Sweetie" Newton Obituary: David Gibson "Sweetie" Newton CHARLOTTE, Tenn. -- David Gibson "Sweetie" Newton, 69, of Charlotte, Tenn., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at his residence. Graveside services will be held at the David Newton Family Cemetery in Norman Park with Preston Norman officiating. Born June 28, 1935, in Colquitt County, Mr. Newton was the first child of Opal B. Newton and the late David L. Newton. He was a farmer's son, an athlete, a Cold Warrior, a journalist, a filmmaker, a businessman and, above all else, a husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Newton served in the U.S. Air Force, teaching wilderness survival to Air Force bombing crews. He also helped found the BASS fishing industry. Family members said he helped other men build empires, but never one of his own; he lived a modest life; and he was a good husband and Papa and the best Grandpa any boy ever had. Mr. Newton was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gayle S. Newton, and his father, David L. Newton. Survivors include his mother, Opal B. Newton; two sons, Mark David Newton and wife Annette and Richard M. Newton and wife Karen; five brothers, Wayne, Franklin, Tapley, Steve and William "Bud" Newton; two sisters, Alice Mosley and Kathy Strange; and five grandsons, David, Brian, Scott, Michael and Adam Newton. |
