Note: In 1695 Rev. Joseph Lord led a company of persons from MA to form a settlement in SC. Samuel and Increase Sumner, with their families and their sister, Joane Way, were among these emigrants, and the formal dismission of the Sumners "to the Church of Christ near Newington in SC" is found on the records of the Church of Dorchester, MA, under date of 1 Nov 1696. The settlement was called Dorchester, but about 1752 it was abandoned for a new site at Midway in Georgia. The names of Nathaniel Sumner of Dorchester, SC, 1724, and Edward Sumner of the same place 1749, are both found at the Suffolk Registry of Deeds. Edward Sumner was one of those who moved to Midway in 1753, where Thomas Sumner m.
